Bitcoin Profit Calculation
Note
In the US, crypto gains are taxed as capital gains: 0/15/20% for long-term holdings, plus the 3.8% net investment income tax above the thresholds.
Worked examples
Buying 1 BTC at $60,000 and selling at $75,000 with a 0.05% fee gives $67.50 in fees, so the net profit is $14,932.50, a 24.89% return.
Buying at $90,000 and selling at $70,000 with the same fee turns into a loss of about $20,080, a return of −22.31%.
What the result assumes
Fees are charged on both orders and deducted from the gain, so the net figure is below the price difference. Each order is treated as one fill at a single price; no tax is subtracted here, because crypto taxation depends on the country and the holding period. Staking rewards, airdrops and transfers between wallets are not modelled.
Frequently asked questions
- Is the profit figure before or after tax?
- Before tax. Most countries tax crypto gains as capital gains, so apply your own rate to the net gain to see what you keep.
- Why do fees matter so much on small trades?
- A 0.05% fee is small in absolute terms but repeated on every buy and sell. With frequent trading, fees plus the spread can easily exceed the actual market move.
- Does the calculator account for the exchange rate?
- No. Enter prices and fees in a single currency; if you bought in one currency and sold in another, convert first and add the conversion cost separately.
