Worked Examples

When it is 09:00 in Seoul (UTC+9), it is 00:00 in London (UTC+0) and 19:00 the previous day in New York (UTC-5).

On 15 July Sydney is UTC+10, but on 15 January it is UTC+11 because of daylight saving in the southern hemisphere.

How Offsets and Daylight Saving Work

Every zone is defined as an offset from UTC, and daylight saving adds an hour for part of the year - on different dates in each country, and not at all in places such as Japan, India or Arizona. Two zones can therefore differ by 30 or 45 minutes rather than whole hours, as with India (UTC+5:30) and Nepal (UTC+5:45).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do some zones differ by half an hour?

Several countries chose a non-integer offset to suit their longitude: India is UTC+5:30, Nepal UTC+5:45 and parts of Australia UTC+8:45.

Does the converter know the local date?

Yes. Crossing midnight changes the date as well as the time, so a call from Seoul in the evening lands on the previous day in New York.

Which day does the International Date Line change?

Crossing the line changes the calendar date by one day, and Samoa and Kiribati have even moved the line to align their working week with trading partners.
