Blood Pressure Calculator
Enter your systolic and diastolic blood pressure to determine your blood pressure stage and calculate pulse pressure and MAP.
Blood Pressure Guide
This calculator uses WHO/ESH guidelines. Consult a doctor for an accurate diagnosis. Pulse Pressure = Systolic โ Diastolic; MAP = Diastolic + Pulse Pressure / 3
Worked Examples
118 over 76 is normal, while 135 over 88 is stage 1 hypertension under the 2017 ACC/AHA categories.
A reading of 185 over 120 is a hypertensive crisis and needs emergency care regardless of symptoms.
How the Categories Work
The higher of the two numbers decides the category, so 118 over 92 counts as stage 2. One reading proves nothing: diagnosis needs repeated measurements on separate days, taken seated after five minutes of rest. Home monitors read slightly lower than clinic devices, and European guidelines still use 140/90 as the threshold.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is pulse pressure?
- Systolic minus diastolic - about 40 mmHg in a typical adult. A pulse pressure above 60 can point to arterial stiffness in older adults.
- What is mean arterial pressure?
- MAP โ diastolic + (systolic โ diastolic) / 3, roughly 93 for 120/80. Above 65 keeps organs perfused, which matters in critical care.
- Is one high reading dangerous?
- Not on its own. Stress, caffeine, a full bladder or talking during the measurement can raise it by 10-20 mmHg; recheck calmly and see a doctor if readings stay high.
